According to statistics released by the International Aluminum Institute (IAI), the amount of post-consumer aluminum scrap reached 20 million tons in 2019, which hit a record high, representing nearly 60% of total aluminum scrap. The figure meant that 300 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions were reduced due to lower demand for primary aluminum.

The IAI expected that aluminum demand will increase by about 80% by 2050, and recycled aluminum will meet 50% of the demand, while the rate might be higher due to the current improving recycling works and technology.

The post-consumer aluminum scrap is mainly from the packaging, automobiles, and construction industries.
