According to the report from the International Aluminum Institute (IAI), the total carbon dioxide emissions of the global aluminum industry have to be reduced by 77% compared to the 2018 level by 2050. It was predicted that aluminum smelting should cut emissions by nearly 90%, from 823 million tons to 90 million tons.

In 2018, electricity-related emissions in the smelting process were 670 million tons. Under pathways, the figure has to fall to 8 million tons by 2050.

As for alumina, the industry’s greenhouse gas emissions could fall by almost half from 171 million tons in 2018 to 90 million tons by 2050.

With the growing economy, urbanization, and infrastructure construction, the global demand for aluminum products will increase by 81%, showing that the aluminum industry will face much pressure to cut emissions.

All in all, based on the calculations, in comparison with 2050, the aluminum industry’s measures to maximize recycling rate and resource efficiency will help achieve the goal of a 20% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions.
