According to Japan Aluminium Association (JAA), Japan’s shipment of rolled aluminum products, including plates and extrusions, totaled around 1.9 million tons in the fiscal year 2021, up by 9.4% year on year, showing an increase for the first time in four years. The performance also surpassed the pre-epidemic shipment of roughly 1.88 million tons in 2019.

Compared to the previous fiscal year, the demand decreased owing to the COVID-19 epidemic. The requirement for automobile materials dropped in the second half of the year, but the demand for battery-related and building materials recovered significantly.

In March, the shipment of rolled aluminum products, including plates and extrusions, dropped by 0.1% year on year to approximately 172,000 tons, a negative growth after five months, due to lower domestic automobile production caused by the shortage of chips.
