Norilsk: Global nickel supply surplus to reach 52,000 tons in 2021

According to Norilsk Nickel (Nornickel), the nickel surplus was revised to 76,000 tons in 2020, down from the previous estimated 108,000 tons. The nickel surplus will be 52,000 tons in 2021, compared to the previous 75,000 tons.

Experts thought that the year-on-year increase of 15% in demand for primary nickel after 2021 will be offset by the large-scale expansion of nickel pig iron (NPI) production capacity in Indonesia.

The surplus in 2022 was expected to exceed 100,000 tons, due to the continued increase in low-grade nickel output. In the long run, the demand for nickel will mainly from the battery industry.
