Norwegian aluminum producer Norsk Hydro is going to develop the HalZero production technology with a test facility with the support of NOK 141 million from the Norwegian government via a state enterprise Enova.

HalZero is a new process for the production of primary aluminum. Carbon dioxide will not be emitted during the process but oxygen instead.

With this move, Hydro is hopeful to start the pilot production of zero-carbon primary aluminum by 2030.

Hydro has been working on the development of the HalZero technology for seven years. The total investment for the development was expected to be around NOK 400 million.
