The Philippines’ government announced on May 21st that the country’s nickel ore output in the first quarter had fallen by 27% year on year to around 28,000 tons.

The Philippines Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) indicated that in the first quarter, the production for half of the 29 nickel mines in the country was suspended due to the maintenance or poor weather conditions, and it was resulting in zero output for these nickel mines.

Since Indonesia began to ban nickel ore exports in January, the Philippines was expected to become China's main supplier of nickel ore this year. Nickel ore imported from China was processed and used to produce nickel pig iron, which was a key raw material for stainless steel production.
