Global mining giant Rio Tinto announced an investment of C$1.4 billion (US$1.1 billion) in the expansion of its AP60 aluminum smelter equipped with low-carbon technology in Saguenay, Quebec.
According to the expansion, 96 new AP60 pots will be added, which will raise the production capacity of primary aluminum by around 160,000 tons per year, enough for 400,000 electric cars. With the expansion, there will be a total of 134 AP60 pots in the smelter, with an annual capacity of 220,000 tons.
After two and a half years of expansion construction, the new pots will be commissioned in the first half of 2026 and the smelter will be fully put into operation by the end of 2026.
The Quebec government will provide the project with financial support of up to C$150 million (US$113 million). 1,000 jobs will be created during the peak of construction, and 100 permanent jobs will be maintained.
