Audley Shaw, Jamaican Transport and Mining Minister, said that Rusal, the world’s leading aluminum producer in Russia, has been paying consistently to Jamaica and honoring the deal as part of an agreement to pay production taxes in 2021.

So far, Rusal has paid approximately 45% of a US$35 million bauxite production tax that it owes Jamaica.

As part of the deal in 2021, Rusal made an upfront payment of 40% to the government last fall and then agreed to 30 payments per month from November 2021.

Rusal is currently not subject to sanctions by Jamaica or the US; however, the Western sanctions on Russia may make the company’s international projects complicated.
