The South Australian government officially announced that it had started to seek partners to inaugurate South Australia’s green iron and steel industry. The government will begin an expression of interest (EoI) process in June in order to look for enterprises jointly developing hydrogen-based direct reduction iron (DRI) plants.

Compared to furnaces using coal, DRI plants could convert iron ore to steel through renewable energy, and it can reduce carbon emissions by 95%. Besides, DRI and hot briquetted iron (HBI) have several advantages, such as higher iron content, lower impurities, and improved process efficiency.
