South32, a mining and metals company headquartered in Australia, produced 1.29 million tons of alumina in the first quarter that ended September 30, 2023, up by 3% compared to the same period a year ago. The increase was mainly due to Worsley Alumina’s completion of planned calciner maintenance work and Brazil Alumina’s recovery from a temporary outage of port infrastructure.

During the period, the company’s aluminum production fell by 0.7% quarter on quarter and grew by 3% year on year to 288,000 tons. Nickel output declined by 19% quarter on quarter and by 14% year on year to 8,300 tons.

Despite the challenging operating environment, South32 maintained its annual production guidance across all businesses for the 2024 financial year.
