The Podemos-affiliated Workers’ Commissions (CCOO) and the Socialist Party (PSOE)-affiliated General Workers’ Union (UGT), two largest trade unions in Spain, have withdrawn the four-month strike at Alcoa’s San Ciprián aluminum smelter, which was launched due to Alcoa’s layoff plan involving 530 workers and 1,500 indirect jobs.

The trade unions decided to cancel the strike on January 22. CCOO, UGT, and the Galician-nationalist trade union Confederación Intersindical Galega (CIG) reached an agreement with Alcoa, which was to sell the plant to the Spanish government and then resell it to another private firm.
