Ukraine's flat bar steel exports increase in Jan-May

Although it is at war, Ukraine is trying to boost steel exports. According to data released by the Ukrainian steelmakers' association Ukrmetallurgprom, from January to May this year, Ukraine's flat steel exports increased by 127.9% year on year to about 677,000 metric tons, while semi-finished steel exports were 786,000 metric tons, a year-on-year increase of 66.2%.

During this period, exports of section steel reached 217,000 metric tons, an increase of 10.7% over the same period last year; domestic steel consumption decreased by 3.6% year on year to 1.36 million metric tons, of which 473,000 metric tons were imported steel.

In terms of imports, Ukraine imported 388,000 metric tons of flat steel, a year-on-year increase of 22%, while the import of section steel increased by 4.5% compared to the same period in 2023, reaching 76,000 metric tons. The country's semi-finished steel exports in January-May were 8,500 metric tons, compared with 4,300 metric tons recorded in the same period last year.
