As a result of both parties’ negotiations, the US decided to replace 25% tariffs on Japan’s steel products with tariff-free import quotas, but the 10% tariffs on aluminum imports from Japan were maintained.

In March 2018, US President Trump imposed tariffs of 25% on steel and 10% on aluminum on the ground of national security based on Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962.

The US and the EU reached an agreement to ease the dispute on steel and aluminum tariffs at the end of October last year. The US agreed to replace the 232 tariffs on EU’s steel and aluminum products with a quota system.
