Pittsburgh-based integrated steelmaker United States Steel Corporation (U.S. Steel) has announced ambitious goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. The announcement is part of company’s efforts to expand its previously announced sustainability commitments.
The company aims to achieve this goal by leveraging its increasing number of electric arc furnaces (EAFs) along with other path-breaking technologies. U.S. Steel also plans to boost public-private collaboration across industries and global stakeholders on innovative technologies and also by tapping carbon-neutral electricity sources to power its operations, said the company press release.
David B. Burritt, President and Chief Executive Officer, U.S. Steel noted that the announcement of net-zero goal demonstrates the company’s commitment to support the U.N. Paris Agreement on climate change, which envisages global carbon neutrality by 2050. The net-zero goal extends U. S. Steel’s existing goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions intensity by 20% across the company’s global footprint by 2030, he added.
With the aim of providing further boost to its sustainability priorities, the company has named Vice President Richard L. Fruehauf as its Chief Strategy and Sustainability Officer.
