Sindicato 1, the workers union at Chile's Escondida, the world’s largest copper mine by production, has accepted BHP’s latest offer and reached an agreement not to start a strike scheduled for November 28 and 30.
According to the union’s statement, the offer contains a series of concrete and verifiable measures to improve workers’ health and safety, especially intensive joint inspections on all work areas, carried out by the union and the company. The proposal also leaves the company's ongoing reform of its operating practices aside.
The Escondida copper mine accounts for about 5% of the world's copper output. The mine is located in Northern Chile, the world's largest copper producer.
