According to a statement of Alcoa, Alcoa’s subsidiary in Spain planned to invest US$69 million over the next six months to upgrade the suspended San Ciprian aluminum smelter, whose production capacity is 228,000 tons per year.

The upgrade will take place during the period from May to September. The works include a US$42 million upgrade in anode baking furnaces, work on the magnetic compensation area, and the addition of a new main transformer.

The plant closed its electrolysis and anode units in early 2022 and planned to restart them in 2024.
