According to statistics, Canada’s primary aluminum exports to the US dropped by 2.6% year on year from May to June, and the US’ aluminum imports from Canada had a decrease of nearly 5% in the first half of this year compared to the same period in 2017.

It was understood that the US’ annual output of raw metals was only about 1 million tons, while the consumption was six times the figure.

The Aluminum Association of Canada (AAC) said that Canada’s aluminum has not only always been the main competitive advantage of US manufacturers since the early 20th century but also a key material part for the US’ national defense and industry. Therefore, the re-imposition of tariffs will only increase costs for US consumers and businesses during the economic recovery period.

Separately, Rio Tinto is coordinating with US customers to reduce the negative impact of Trump’s tariffs.
