In a letter written by the American Primary Aluminum Association (APAA) to President-elect Joe Biden, the APAA stated that the withdrawal of the import tariffs may lead to a shutdown of the US’ smelters of metals.

According to the letter, the current global aluminum market is facing a problem of oversupply. The US’ production capacity of primary aluminum has been raised by nearly 60% since the 232 tariffs were implemented, and two idle smelters have been restarted.

However, if the 232 tariffs are canceled before the global aluminum supply gets balanced, the US’ aluminum smelters will face a risk of being shut down again.
