Century Aluminum, a US-based primary aluminum producer, started to build a casthouse of low-carbon billet at its Norðurál Grundartangi smelter in Iceland. This project will cost US$120 million, and it will be used to produce low-carbon Natur-Al™ billet and increase the output of primary foundry alloys.

The Norðurál Grundartangi smelter has an annual production capacity of aluminum of around 320,000 tons. The new casthouse project will create another production capacity of 150,000 tons of low-carbon billet per year.

Besides, this project will also raise the smelter’s annual production capacity of primary foundry alloys from the current 60,000 tons to 120,000 tons. The plant’s standard-grade ingot production will be replaced by the increased billet and primary foundry alloy capacity.
