According to a recent report about China’s tight energy supply’s impact on the metal industry released by Wood Mackenzie (WoodMac), so far this year, China’s policy to curtail power has led to a drop of approximately 7% in the domestic annual aluminum production.

WoodMac pointed out that around 3.2 million tons per year of aluminum production capacity has been reduced so far this year, only a little of which has been resumed. Besides, WoodMac foresaw that there will be more aluminum production in Yunnan to be suspended in the fourth quarter since the drought has aggravated hydroelectric power generation.

The report forecasted that the impact on copper is not too serious. However, consumption in the first half of 2022 might be impacted if the power curtailment measures become more extreme.
