According to data from World Steel Association (worldsteel), the crude steel output from the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) in the first seven months totaled about 50.5 million tons, decreasing by 18.8% compared with the same period last year.

In July, CIS’s crude steel production was estimated to be 6.4 million tons, dropping by 29% year on year.

In July, Russia produced crude steel with approximately 5.5 million tons, falling by 13.2% year on year. Cumulative Russia’s steel output from January to July was 41.4 million tons, dropping by 7% from the same period last year.

Ukraine used to be the second largest steel producer in the CIS, and its crude steel production in July plunged by 85% year on year to merely 281,000 tons. The decrease was because the Russia-Ukraine war made steel production in Ukraine suspended.

Although most of Ukraine’s steel manufacturers resumed work in April, the capacity utilization was low, and logistics were still interrupted.
