In spite of logistical problems caused by the Russia-Ukraine war and a tough talk from the western countries on curbing Russia’s foreign exchange earnings, the EU and the US have sharply increased purchases of Russia's key industrial metals.

According to statistics, the EU and the US imports of aluminum and nickel surged by 70% during the period from March to June this year, with a total value of US$1.98 billion.

During the period, the EU monthly imported around 78,200 tons of unwrought aluminum from Russia, a year-on-year hike of 13%, becoming the biggest importer of Russia’s unwrought aluminum.

Meanwhile, the US’ monthly average imports of Russia’s aluminum were roughly 23,000 tons, rising by 21% year on year.
