Hydro invests in new water treatment plant at Schwandorf site

Norwegian aluminum producer Hydro invested EUR 3 million in a new water treatment plant at its Schwandorf legacy site located in the eastern part of Bavaria, Germany.

Hydro manages three bauxite residue facilities at the Schwandorf legacy site. Residue from operations by German aluminum producer VAW was held at the site from the 1930s through the 1990s, and Hydro started to operate the site after it acquired VAW in 2002.

Bjørn Kjetil Mauritzen, Head of Sustainability in Hydro, said that the company has dedicated capabilities and resources to manage its legacy portfolio globally. It uses state-of-the-art technology at the Schwandorf site to protect the soil and water environments.

The new permanent water treatment plant at the Schwandorf site was scheduled to be operational during the second quarter and third quarter of 2024.
