Jamalco alumina plant in Halse Hall, Clarendon, Jamaica has recently resumed its operations with an annual production capacity of 1.42 million tons. The refinery was closed due to a large fire at its power plant in August last year.

With the operation resumption, the production of alumina was expected to rebound, and it will offset Jamaica’s slowdown in economic growth in the fiscal year 2022-23 which was caused by the suspension of the leading alumina plants in the country.

Since the shutdown of the Jamalco alumina refinery, Jamaica's alumina production plunged by 76.8%, and the mining and quarrying sector dropped by 60.6%.

Jamaica has bauxite reserves of two billion tons, ranking fifth after Guinea, Vietnam, Australia, and Brazil.
