South Korean steelmaker POSCO planned to start the construction of a pilot plant for carbon-neutral steelmaking.

The pilot facility, located in North Gyeongsang Province, will have an annual production capacity of 300,000 tons, and produce based on hydrogen rather than fossil fuels such as coal and natural gas, which was expected to reduce carbon emissions by up to 90%.

This hydrogen-based pilot plant will be the world’s first to use fluidized bed reduction reactor (HyREX) technology, a cutting-edge green steel technology that uses hydrogen as a reduction agent to produce iron from iron oxide, which can significantly decrease carbon emissions in the steelmaking process.

The pilot plant was scheduled to be completed in 2026 and will begin the test production of low-carbon steel.
