According to a report released by Rio Tinto, its aluminum output had a year-on-year increase of 3% to 803,000 tons in the first quarter of this year as the Becancour smelter in Quebec is running at full capacity and the Kitimat smelter in British Columbia is approaching the end of its pot relining cycle.

Besides, Rio Tinto achieved good production stability and operational performance at its remaining smelter portfolio.

This February, Rio Tinto announced that it has reached an agreement on a revised power contract, allowing the ISAL smelter in Iceland to continue the operation and improve its competitive position.

As for alumina, Rio Tinto’s first-quarter output had a year-on-year increase of 1% to around 2.03 million tons, due to the stable operations of its two Pacific refineries.
