Alcoa of Australia has inked a nine-year agreement with AGL Energy Limited (AGL), effective from July 1, 2026, when the existing contracts with AGL end.

Under the deal, AGL will supply 300 megawatts of power to Portland Aluminium Smelter in the state of Victoria in Australia.

The power supply can fulfill around 50% of the energy required to meet the smelter’s nameplate capacity of 358,000 tons of aluminum per year. The smelter is currently operating at roughly 75% of the nameplate capacity.

Currently, around 40% of the smelter’s electricity consumption is sourced from renewable energy, such as electricity from the nearby Portland wind farm.
