Rio Tinto to invest in capacity expansion of low-carbon aluminum

Rio Tinto planned to invest US$87 million to increase the low-carbon aluminum production in Canada as it believed that global restraint of climate change will boost the demand for electric vehicles, solar panels, and recyclable packaging continues growing, and aluminum is a key material for these needs.

Rio Tinto stated that it will add a new production capacity of 26,500 tons at its smelter in the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region of Quebec by 2030. The capacity will be raised by 45%, and secure around 100 existing jobs at this smelter.

Rio Tinto foresaw that the global aluminum market will grow at an average annual rate of 3.3% in the next ten years.
